Public Service Announcement: Cloud Computing fail
« on: March 01, 2017, 10:51:42 AM »
According to Daniel Sone in Washington DC and several others who chimed in to support his post, "Basically, anything using cloud-based storage through Amazon is down. 17hats, shootproof, netflix, wave apps, sign now, etc."

To my knowledge, I have no Amazon cloud, but I don't know who might be using them in the background.  Yesterday I'd had trouble with M&T bank, posting to the Zenfolio gallery and my Wordpress blog.  The blog is hosted by Network Solutions, but who knows where they get additional cloud storage?

So fair warning to all of us, if we're having troubles with online services or storage, consider our backup procedures, especially financial and photographic.

Interesting post Jeff. I saw something pop up in my Inbox regarding some such company I use/get info from/site I visit being down (I don't remember who) due to the Amazon fail.

I'm not yet using the Cloud to store anything - this being one of the reasons for my reluctence. I'm actually looking to use a WD HDD instead:

My sister and her husband use a couple of these due to the sensitive nature of their business, and I've been rather impressed. I needed an image whilst I was out with her one day, and she had it backed up as well. Two seconds later, she had it on her phone and I could see it perfectly - as she said "I could just create a folder for you and you can access your files too!"

I like the idea of the Cloud, it's just annoying stuff like this that has held me back (so far); maybe the WD idea is a comprimise I can live with - I'll look at it in more detail over the next few weeks. :)
