This is a reasonable reminder as to why you shouldn\'t split your domains up.

Anyone disagree?

I disagree, especially he\'s telling that Google treats subdomain.domain.com and domain.com exactly the same way. Google treats and gives different value on subdomains.

I guess the post is not available anymore. At the end of the day, it is key having many qualified domains linking to your site.

The importance of link-backs has dropped massively.  One reason being that so many sites were abusing that system.  There is really only one important thing for successful SEO and that is quality content.

Quality content and quality back-links (high PR and niche related) are important for SEO. Link-backs can help not only for SEO but also for referring customers if they are inter-related like wedding photographer's site to wedding celebrant, wedding planner, wedding supplier, wedding cars, etc,. Building hundreds of backlinks are useless if they are not related to your niche.

With respect I recommend you update yourself regarding SEO and linkbacks.   What counts is quality, well written, grammar and spell checked, relevant content.

Quality content now reigns supreme and link backs should be content related link-backs, such as a blog post link about your wedding photography.

I totally agree with you, quality content is king and gets the attention of many visitors and shared to others. It will also create back links when some bloggers or website owners linked to your site.

Link back should be content related or niche related.
I mentioned earlier about link backs, I am not talking about plain reciprocal links because these are useless. But if another website like a wedding celebrant's site mentions your wedding photography website, like recommending your service and they place an anchor text and link of your website in one of the content in their page, then it creates a good link back and can also help you get referrals.

Funny, every wedding photographer is spending more time on asEO rather taking pictures these days myseld included! I have been doing a freat amount of seo reading this past year due to my site dropping in ranking .... Id never thought my professional live would so much depend om the internet! And google this google that.
Matter of the fact is that all mentioned above is important, the problem is that to do it well it is a full time occupation eating my passion away

Hey what's up guys,

I would just like to bring some light to the SEO situation as I have many pages ranking #1 for my own startup flyerco which is totally unrelated to photography.

Backlinks are STILL the major ranking factor and will continue to be
So why have you heard content is king?
You have heard content is king because generally if you create great content, someone might link to it which helps drive your overall rankings up! This is not true for smaller industries such as photography. If you create the greatest piece of content in the world, you don't have very many places to share it so the chances of you getting links from it are slim to none. You should still create great content because people who do see it need to get value from it to buy into any of your services / brand. But it wont rank you, I promise you that.

The second most important factor is on-page seo
If you dont have the proper on page seo setup, don't expect to be ranked for terms that you're aiming for. If you're using wordpress I suggest Yoast plugin (free) and if you want to learn SEO I suggest googling "On page seo by moz" - It's one of the best guides out there.

Guest posting is still highly relevant
Matt cutts came out and said don't guest post in a video.... Well kinda... What he ACTUALLY said was don't do low quality guest post that looks like spam and hunting for links. Guest posting is still an awesome way to increase your rankings but you want to make sure that you're only doing it at very high quality places. Guest posting on 10 other low ranking photography blogs will just hurt you.

Let me know if you have any more questions, I hope this helps :)
