Once again I'm posting a quote from an email by Rob Provencher.  I may not always agree with his position, but when it's good advice, it's worth passing along.  This also seems pertinent because it plays into a recent discussion about the race to the bottom in one of the other areas of this forum.


"Mediocrity is not a standard"

If your work sucks, face it. Better yet, do something about it.
If your business and marketing sucks...same advice.
 
More importantly, stop everything you're doing and get serious about success. Pull the plug on all distractions and get seriously focused on that one issue.
 
There's a fight going on right now.
 
A fight to maintain quality and stop the slow slide into mediocrity that the photographic industry is sinking into.
 
Do not allow mediocrity to be your standard.
 
How do you know if things aren't working out for you?
 
Simple. Sales.
 
Does anyone want what you got?
 
If you have something to sell, then your marketing is a cake walk. It doesn't mean you don't have to do anything, but at least you're heading in the right direction when you have something of quality to sell.
 
It all starts with the product.
 
But be realistic. If it ain't there, it ain't there.
 
Stop everything and send in every single weapon you have at your disposal to raise the level of quality and create a product that you can sell.
 
Be warned....an alibi is more comfortable and easier
than the hard slow slog to success.

 
Everyday you point to that when you have success. You have to work at it everyday and risk. It's easy to slip into alibi land and get cozy with mediocrity.
 
Business is a blood sport. Take your eye off the ball and whamo! You're down for the count.
 
Don't believe me? Listen in on any mastermind meeting of successful business owners and you will hear a consistent story over and over of bankruptcy and "failure".
 
But now, success.
 
Because they did not settle for mediocrity and their lessons were forged in a valley of fire.
 
Keep up the fight for professionalism.

We need to take responsibility for promoting and pushing quality and reminding our clients AND out leads that there is a difference... it's not that hard to do.
 
As long as we are willing to do it....my ideas?

quality photography
effective communication
boldness (genius)
creativity
And more. Much more....

I think this is especially relevant. From what I see and read, there is far too much looking over the shoulder at what the competition is doing, to the point that successful and profitable photographers start questioning everything they do because some two bit hack down the road is practically giving away crappy work. They should be of no concern whatsoever.

One of the reasons we started this forum was to filter the noise online from those who refuse to understand that "Business is a blood sport".  I don't think I'd heard it put that way before, but completely agree.  That doesn't mean hurting the competition through lies or manipulation so much as it means being always keeping ourselves in shape, in training, improving and focused, just like top athletes.
